Dependendo da sua profissão, talvez a surdez não atrapalhe tanto. E se você fosse um músico? E se o som fosse parte intrínseca do seu dia a dia, do que te mais dá prazer, e o que você resolveu fazer para o resto da vida?
Riz Ahmed (Star Wars: Rogue One, The O.A., Venom) interpreta Ruben, um baterista de um duo de metal e ex-viciado. Junto com sua namorada Lou (Olivia Cooke), eles rodam o país em seu trailer durante uma turnê de apresentações.
Até que, em determinado momento, Ruben começa a sentir que algo está diferente, os sons estão estranhos, e começa a apresentar dificuldade de entender o que está acontecendo.
O diretor Darius Marder tenta representar essa desorientação e a perda auditiva de Ruben através de um belíssimo trabalho de som. Belíssimo e angustiante. É possível sentir a ansiedade de Ruben ao ter dificuldade para interpretar sons, o que as pessoas estão falando, o que sua parceira de banda está tocando.
É na casa para surdos e viciados de Joe (Paul Rici) que ele vai tentar entender e aceitar sua nova realidade, aprendendo a se comunicar através da linguagem de sinais e a entender como sua vida vai ser daquele ponto em diante. Mas Ruben também não abre mão de uma cirurgia cara que promete recuperar (de uma forma um pouco diferente da original) sua audição.
Ahmed conta que teve dificuldades para dormir na véspera e no início das gravações do longa:
